Post Waxing 101: Aftercare for Brazilian and Body Waxing
A Brazilian or body wax removes hair from the root and can leave the skin temporarily more sensitive. Mild warmth, pinkness, or tenderness can be normal immediately after your appointment.
Good aftercare reduces irritation, protects the freshly waxed skin, and helps prevent ingrown hairs. The first 24 to 48 hours are the most important.
The First 24 to 48 Hours
Keep the waxed area clean, cool, and free from unnecessary friction. Use lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance free cleanser when needed.
Avoid scrubs, exfoliating acids, retinoids, fragranced lotions, and other active skin care products on the area. Do not scratch, pick, or repeatedly touch the skin.
After a Brazilian wax, avoid sexual activity for about 24 hours. Friction and sweat can irritate freshly waxed skin.
Exercise, Heat, and Water
Skip intense exercise for at least 24 hours. If the skin is still red or tender, wait up to 48 hours before returning to your regular workout.
Sweat, heat, and tight workout clothing can increase irritation around the follicles. Avoid hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and heavily chlorinated pools for 24 to 48 hours. A lukewarm shower is the better choice during this time.
Protect the Skin From Sun Exposure
Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning for at least 48 hours after waxing. Freshly waxed skin can be more vulnerable to sensitivity and discoloration.
Once the skin has settled, apply a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to any exposed waxed areas. Reapply according to the product directions, especially when spending time outdoors.
Choose Loose, Breathable Clothing
Wear loose clothing that allows the skin to breathe during the first day. Tight jeans, leggings, shapewear, and snug workout clothing can create heat and friction.
After a Brazilian wax, breathable cotton underwear is a comfortable choice while the skin settles.
When to Begin Exfoliating
Wait at least 48 hours before exfoliating. If the skin is still sensitive, wait 72 hours or until all redness and tenderness have resolved.
Once the skin is calm, gently exfoliate two to three times each week. You may use a mild body exfoliant, a soft exfoliating cloth or mitt, or a leave on product formulated for ingrown hairs. Use one method at a time and avoid aggressive pressure.
Apply exfoliating and ingrown hair products only to external skin. These products should not be used on internal or delicate mucosal tissue.
How to Help Prevent Ingrown Hairs
Consistent exfoliation is one of the most effective ways to prevent ingrown hairs. It helps remove dead skin cells that can trap new hair beneath the surface.
Daily moisturizing also helps keep the skin soft as the hair begins to grow back. Choose a lightweight, fragrance free moisturizer that does not leave the area feeling heavy or greasy.
Do not pick, squeeze, or dig at bumps. This can increase inflammation and may cause infection or discoloration. If irritation becomes increasingly painful, hot, swollen, or continues to worsen, seek medical advice.
Maintain a Consistent Waxing Schedule
Most clients do best with a waxing appointment every four to five weeks. This usually allows enough regrowth for effective removal and helps keep results more predictable. Clients who wax consistently and experience slower regrowth may be able to wait up to six weeks.
Avoid shaving or tweezing between appointments because both can interrupt that cycle. Your ideal schedule may vary slightly depending on the treatment area, your rate of hair growth, and how your skin responds.
Keep Aftercare Simple
For the first two days, focus on keeping the skin clean, cool, and free from heat and friction. Once the skin is calm, begin gentle exfoliation and regular moisturizing.
Good aftercare, combined with a consistent waxing schedule, can help keep the skin smoother and reduce the chance of irritation and ingrown hairs.
